2 stabs at Miette’s Tomboy Cake – and a giveaway!

I told you a couple weeks ago about Miette’s wonderful cookbook and my utter excitement at trying out some of the beautiful cakes.  Well all my cake decorating supplies arrived and I jumped at two opportunities to try out my skills – a first birthday party, of the notorious Dr. J, and a baby shower!

I needed to make the darling cake on the front – the Tomboy Cake – but the pink just wouldn’t do for a boy’s birthday.  Luckily, each cake recipe makes two perfectly sized 6″ cakes and I obviously needed to practice.  I decided to make a pink version (with pomegranate buttercream) for a staff meeting in preparation for the birthday party.

Version number 2 is the lovely double chocolate cake with straight up vanilla buttercream – not much better to look at, but the taste got lots of thumbs up.

Let’s just say, I still need practice, but I am confident my cakes will be stunning some day!  (Stay tuned for the Lemon Debutante cake – I made one for the b-day party – and a slightly more beautiful version for the baby shower tomorrow!)

    I am making balsamic lentils. An onion, cooked and browned; followed by 1 TBSP of balsamic, three minced garlic cloves, dried basil, a dash of red pepper flakes for another few minutes. Then add 3/4 cup of dried lentils, 2 cups of water, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and cook for 25 minutes, or until the lentils are done; add another tablespoon of balsamic, adjust seasoning, and serve. Boom.

      Sounds awesome. If you cut out a few more characters, you could probably tweet that, but then you would lose the sound effect at the end.

      When can we cook another fantastic meal together? I want an encore of New Years.

    made your cranberry bars for friends and got rave reviews! and they even looked valentines-y :) next up: white cheddar mac and cheese with green chiles from frontier. not healthy, but yummy for sure!

    Looks fantastic. Just tweeted about it. My Valentine’s treat was chocolate goat cheese truffles rolled in cinnamon. There was also another version rolled lightly in red chile. Recipe should be up one of these days.

    Well, I’m not sure if this counts, but – tonight I’m going to be “cooking” up some home made vapor rub with essential oils and beeswax for the Man and I. We’re a little sick but don’t feel like smearing camphor and petroleum jelly all over our skin. Beeswax and natural oils sound much better!

    I did just make dark chocolate goat cheese truffles for Valentine’s Day. Instead of rolling them in cocoa, I used straight up red chile powder. So. So. Good.

    Love the blog and can’t wait to try one of your recipes!

    Since returning to New York, I have been indulging in take-out which I had greatly missed in my last year as well as anything and everything sold by Trader Joe’s. If, however, I find the time this weekend, I would like to cook some soup – perhaps some butternut squash soup. Yum!
